Welcome to the World of Accommodations…

As an individual with a disability, in order to get through my day to day life; I sometimes need accommodations in place. Dictionary.com defines accommodations as adjustment of differences. I don’t think I could have explained it any better. It’s an adjustment to how I do things. For example, when I was in school my test time was extended. When I go out for fast food, because I don’t have good grip in my hands, I’ll ask for a bag with handles. The list of how I “adjust” to life can go on, but that wouldn’t be what I’m here for today.

I’m here to allow you to open the door to my world. Many individuals with disabilities have accommodations as well. Plot twist!! As a result of COVID-19, now so do you. Instead of driving to work, you’re clocking in from your living room or home office. Instead of riding the bus to school, you’re attending a Zoom video chat with 10+ classmates from your bedroom. Instead of meeting up at the movies, you’re deciding on a show and what time the Netflix party is going to start. These are all adjustments to the new life we’ve been given right now. Without a doubt, we can go back and forth on the pros and cons of the accommodations and adjustments the COVID-19 and quarantine has caused. Just like I could go back and forth on the pros and cons of having accommodations as an individual with a disability. Needless to say, the main reason for accommodations is to keep you safe and to have your best interest at heart.

If we really took time to think about it, individuals with disabilities and individuals without disabilities are more similar than we’d admit. However, society views individuals with disabilities has a burden and problem child 🙄 But hey! That’s a conversation for another time 🤷🤫👀🙈 Point is, the door is cracked and you already have foot in the door. Might as well come all the way in, so we can teach you something 🤗📖✏️
