Montel Williams

Not to be confused with the singer, Montell Jordan, Montel Williams was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 3, 1956. He’s best known for his long-running daytime talk show, The Montel Williams Show, as well as being a actor, radio talk show host and television personality. Williams served our country for 15 years in both the U.S Marine Corps and U.S. Navy.

In 1999, Montel Williams made a guest appearance in an episode of Touched by an Angel. Four months later, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It took 20 years before he was diagnosed. He had to deal with pain in his lower extremities and temporary blindness in the meantime. After his diagnosis, Williams began his advocacy immediately. He wrote two books about health and wellness and even founded the Montel Williams MS Foundation. Williams used his talk show as a huge way to communicate. He discussed wellness-related issues and called out faults to the system and the way they handled health and medicine.

Montel Williams dealt with his pain for 20 years before being diagnosed. Granted, the time difference, but sometimes parents are naive and refuse to pay attention to the signs of their child that eventually ends up having a disability. Montel went through the pain and he didn’t have to, so don’t allow your child to if they don’t have to. It’s hard, but the sooner you face reality, the better. Besides, the child may take a page out of Williams’ book and use their voice to make a difference and educate those around them.
