I had no idea who this guy was until my Papa started watching Shark Tank where he is one of the four “sharks” on the show. Motivational speaker, author, investor, CEO, founder, and president of FUBU, Daymond John had just began his years as a high school student, when he found out that he was diagnosed with a “behavioral issue.” It wasn’t until later that he found out it was actually dyslexia. He always excelled in subjects such as science and math, but struggled with English and writing. In order to level out the playing field, Daymond was able to participate in a co-op program that allowed him to work full time one week and attend school the next.
During an interview that Daymond did with Thrive Global, he listed three ways that helped him get to where he is today:
- John realized that thinking analytically and visually was one of his strengths. So in order for him to process material he read, he had to take action in it.
- His mom was his biggest support system. She had him read to her every Sunday she’d be in the know for the work week.
- Daymond used his visual thinking to get where he is today. He studied the “look” of the music world and kicked off the infamous brand, FUBU.
One of the biggest lessons that we can learn from Daymond is not to let your disability hinder you . Instead, figure out ways you can grow and succeed with it. Adapt with and around it.
