Solange Knowles

Seeing as I am part of the #BeyHive, it’s only right to talk about Solange Knowles. If you couldn’t tell by the last name, she’s Beyonce’s little sister. Solange Piaget Knowles was born on June 24, 1986 in Houston, Texas of Tina and Mathew Knowles. She’s a triple threat and then some. She sings, dances, acts and a businesswoman. Her career began at the age of 13 when she was a back-up dancer for Destiny’s Child. A few years later, Solange signed to her father’s record company, Music World Entertainment at the age of 16. A year later, she got married and in 2004, their son, Juelz was born. Aside from the singing, Solange has stared in movies such as, “Bring It On: All or Nothing” and “Johnson’s Family Vacation.”

Through all the success that Solange has gained, for the longest she battled with a disability that affects 10% of Americans, ADHD, or Attention Deficient Hyperactive Disorder. When first diagnosed, she didn’t believe the doctor. She stated, “I was diagnosed with ADD twice. I didn’t believe the first doctor who told me and I had a whole theory that ADD was just something they invented to make you pay for medicine, but then the second doctor told me I had it.” As a result of the high energy Solange often has as a symptom of ADHD, many thought she was high when indeed she was sober.

Instead of hiding her disability, Solange has taken the initiative to educate people on her diagnose. With a better understanding, it helped with being more focused on her third studio album, “A Seat at the Table.” She’s a great example of don’t let your disability define you.
