Below is some advice that I asked my fellow Facebook friends to give for all the incoming freshmen. Take this advice to heart. We’ve all been there and done that so we know what we’re talking about.
- Have positive vibes.
- Don’t procrastinate
- Don’t eat a lot.
- Don’t lose your life scholarship.
- Enjoy the time with your friends.
- STUDY!! STUDY!! STUDY!!
- Take risks.
- Don’t party too much.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
- Take classes that you’re interested in
- Enjoy EVERY moment because time will fly by!
- Stay away from the clubs. The party life isn’t the best life.
- Be on time and stay on top of your grades and classwork.
- Self-care is important. Take time for yourself.
- Travel and make intentional decisions- they become part of your future opportunities.
- Build relationships with your professors. If you establish a good relationship with them, they will open a lot of doors for you.
- Be involved and get out there! College isn’t just about that degree, making real connections and learning useful skills is just as important.
- If you’re having trouble finding information on a topic remember that every Wikipedia page cites its sources (usually with links) at the bottom.
- Treat your professors like people, not vending machines that give you grades. Visit them during office hours, engage in the things that they show passion for, put in a little consistent effort, and you’ll rarely have to worry about grades.
- Meet with your advisers as often as you can to understand exactly what needs to happen each semester to get you finished as efficiently as possible. If your adviser isn’t able to design a 4-year plan for you then meet with a professor who can. You pay them enough to pester them.
- See your professors, whether you’re struggling or not, building a relationship with them sooner than later is going to do wonders for you. They’re not the same person 1 on 1 like they are in front of an entire class.
- Hit the ground running. It may be tempting to party, drink, and go out all the time but if you put your best effort in early, it will pay off later when senioritis hits. Or early-onset senioritis. Your GPA will thank you. That being said, do enjoy college life.
