One of the biggest problems that we have in society is that we have to make everything out of a competition. It’s like we can’t stand seeing each other win and be on top. This is no exception for the Nicki vs. Cardi comparisons. A couple weeks ago Cardi B took home a Grammy for ‘Best Rap Album’ and the hate towards her was so bad that she deleted her Instagram. First of all, when has cyberbullying ever been okay? Doesn’t matter if you’re a celebrity or not. Second of all, why put to shame all her hard work? Third of all, why can’t people just let others have their shine? More importantly, why can’t women just support one another?
I feel there is definitely enough room in the music industry for them to be at the top. I was in middle school when Nicki first came out. Can’t even tell you how many times “Itty Bitty Piggy” was rapped during fire drills or how many girls I knew were calling themselves Barbies. That was a little over 10 years ago and Nicki’s fan base is still out there, if not larger. Every artist needs a break and steps away from the spotlight from time to time. Whether that reason is to work on new music, spend time with family, enjoy life or just need a little re-evaluation. Although Nicki does release singles here and there, she’s fallen back for now. While she’s doing that, Cardi is holding it down and I salute her. She worked hard on “Invasion of Privacy,” along with music videos while being pregnant. Shout out to her 👏🏽
Women in general go through enough adversities without the feeling of being compared with another. Both ladies are talented and creative. Both ladies have struggled to get where they are today. Both ladies have left a mark in the music industry and it’s just the beginning. There’s nothing wrong having a preference over either artists, but its not necessary to tear either one down in the process. Give credit where it’s due and support them both.
